M.S. 2020, Mechanical Engineering
Ben Woods smiles in front of a tree. He wears a sports coat and a checkered shirt.

Ben graduated from Virginia Tech in 2019 with his Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering. During his undergraduate education, Ben participated in 18 months of internships and co-ops in roles such as a Manufacturing Engineering co-op, Product Design Engineering Intern, and Research Engineering Intern with a focus on Additive Manufacturing. He was also a member of the Propulsion Controls subteam of the Hybrid Electric Vehicle Team (HEVT) at Virginia Tech.

Ben joined the DREAMS lab in early 2019 as a member of the accelerated UG/G Master’s program. His research focused primarily on large format additive manufacturing. The printer used for his research is capable of creating parts up to 8’x8’ and is comprised of an industrial robotic arm coupled with a screw-style extruder rated at extruding 150 lbs/hr. For this specific project, the robot toolpaths were created by converting general gcode directly into robot movement commands via RoboDK.

Ben graduated with his M.S. in mechanical engineering in 2020.
